Some official in the union Human Resources ministry put a spoke into the conferment of a honorary doctorate on India’s international chess star Vishwanathan Anand.
The minister concerned, Kapil Sibal, has expressed apologies over the faux paus.
But the question is, who is going to bear the responsibility for the earlier decision which resulted in some disrespect to the great player?
Actually, Vishwanathan Anand is such a great player that only the university would have been honoured by honouring him. It would have been appropriate to have done it during a maths meet because chess to is a lot like mathematics.
But India, which bends backwards to confer such honorary awards on its corrupt politicians, doesn’t think twice before doing discourtesy to its real heroes.
Another shame of our times, revealing the dichotomy at the heart of a great India that is going to be born in the coming decades.
On one side are its quiet international achievers…on the other is its entrenched bureaucracy and political class living at the expense of the masses.
A award which must have been given to honour a really great man of India now has to be given as a face-saving measure for the HRD ministry…What a shame!
